Sony Digital 8 Camcorder Tapes Blue Screen Pixelation Choppy Picture & Audio -Nonstop Problems
Переглядів 6422 місяці тому
Sony Digital 8 Camcorder Tapes (& Players) are slowly dying a death. Sony introduced the format in 1999 and discontinued in 2007. The last few years I have seen a sharp increase in the problems with pixelation, choppy picture and audio, picture loss, blue screen. The video tapes are degrading over time clogging the video heads & also wearing them out. 22 Years of digitizing tapes, it's the numb...

VHS Tape Static & Tracking Problems From Tapes Copied from Camcorder Tapes to VCR 20-30 Years Ago
I have a Beta cassette that is full of home movies my grandmother took to Kodak 30 years ago and transferred from Super 8 onto cassette. The bulk of it is from the 1960s-1980s. It is the only copy in existence. I sent it to a photo transfer lab through Walmart and they returned it to me saying it was unviewable. I'm heartbroken but I can't bear to get rid of the tape.
Legacy Box has been a nitemare for me! They transferred 20 videos for me and did a terrible terrible job!! they are awful!!
Please do a video on a deep cleaning of camcorders. Please!!!!!
I don’t do that, that’s Tim’s dept.
Hello my disc started to finalize then stopped and now shows the error code 13:02 and I cannot get it to play, finalize, or anything else - I have a Sony handycam and I really love the videos that were on this disc… do you have any suggestions on how to fix this? Can I send it into someone to possible fix?
My camcorder will finalize other discs that I have but will not with this particular disc - I have cleaned it and it has no visible scratches that I notice (my error code says that it is scratched)
They cdroller, PC only though. $75
Hi! May i ask how much is the shipping for digitizing my 8mm Video8 Tape? I live somewhere Southern Asia.
Before that, need to understand what you have and the condition, shipping would be the least of the cost. Anything I get from S Asia, usually mold, sticky shed, nightmare.
I'm glad i found got memories a few years ago. Learned alot, Even having the equipment you have there is still a lot of work. And people dont understand why the prices of transferring film is not cheap. Great work you are doing for the industry.
Cheers Wally!
Guess when there isnt any kind of phone number to call a live peron should be the BIG RED FLAG! I wont be using Legacy Box.
Yep.
I am loving your video and commenting as you work. Just submitted my quote. Thank you, and Boo Legacy Box
Glad you’re enjoying! Yes, F LB!
Hi.may i know why is my dc 100 cant read a disc?this happen before but suddenly its working.now when im try to use it it cant read the disc.disc is new.i already clean the laser.
Prob a defective laser, could be anything though, it’s a nightmare format.
@@gotmemories thanks for the reply.its kinda sad because the camera work perfectly but i can't record.pretty cool if i use it in 2024
You are blessed to have a service technician next door. I have to drive from kilgore texas to dallas texas, thats over 2 hours away to get a service technician to repair my decks and cameras. Keep up the great work.
Yes, Tim is handy indeed!
I'm subscribed now, this is fantastic info. I've got my own little local scanning biz. I scan in moldy tapes all the time, lol. I have had maybe a dozen and a half gigs. The largest one being 77 film reels, and another was 54 vhs tapes. I give them unlisted UA-cam Playlist so they can watch the progress, and then a usb stick. I still need to spread my ads around the town. I'm glad you hear about your personalization, bc I'm the same!! I end up learning their family's and seeing all their milestones. So then I'm texting them to say "go check out the Playlist, i just put 3 more up!" And also I tell them when I'm experiencing issues.
Fantastic to hear! Let me know your business name and location! I refer people in the local areas to passionate, high quality transfer businesses!
Will a Japanese head cleaner work on an American Sony Digital8 camcorder? Are there differences in NTSC_M and NTSC_J like there is with PAL?
No difference
@@gotmemories thanks
What’s a good quantity to send you? I have maybe 40 of those little blue ones, and half a dozen of the larger ones. I wasn’t planning on sending them all at once though. Also, eventually send a bunch of VHS as well ( another time).
If you fill out the quote form as best you can @ gotmemories.com with your total quantity I’ll send a quote with breakdown options and you can decide from there what you’d like to send.
@@gotmemories thanks. I just looked at them today, and they actually looked good. No smell.
Hey I went to your site and don't meet the criteria for your minimum (2 mini DV tapes) who would you recommend for just 2 tapes?
Try Memory Lane Media in PA. They do great work & have a $200 min.
@gotmemories thanks for your reply, I only have 2 tapes though, I'll see if there's anything else I can dig up, thanks again! Have a great day. And loved your video, I will subscribe 😃
Hi there! I am using an legato capture card to transfer video 8 footage to my computer. When I play the footage on the camera, it looks fine, but when I see the playback on the computer, the video flashes a lot and are overexposed. I’ve tried a few different cords and same result. Do you know what the issue could be?
Sounds like a computer issue or could be a defective elgato.
Nice video. Thanks for sharing your knowledge, you have massive patience doing what your doing.
Thanks! Yes, it’s very tedious work indeed!
A great video. Thanks for sharing your knowledge and showing what you do.
You’re welcome!
Once you digitalization them, can we take those files, and edit them ourselves?
Yes!
I saved the VHS C Sharp camcorder and Tapes my father used for a while starting in 1986. I hoped I’d be able to use the camcorder to view them and record to a computer. I pulled the camcorder out yesterday and it’s not working, just happily flashing its lights red. I am afraid to try the VHS adapter units because I remember having problems and a couple tapes damaged back then. My plan is to purchase a working camcorder that supports video playback to watch/record the tapes. I’d appreciate any tips or suggestions you might have to share with me? You have set up an impressive workshop. It’s nice meeting people who transform a skill into something much more.
Good luck on your project! I do recommend buying 3-5 players, they’re all old and crap out.
Thanks for helping
Happy to help!
Very nice, do you have cleaner for u-matic taps or betacam?
Soon!
THEY SHOULD BE ASHAMED OF THERE SEVES
Amen! Horrible.
I have a Hitachi DZBX35A and it doesn’t read any disc i insert and they’re Maxwell 1.4GB 30 mins, could the discs I have be the issue?
Hitachi’s are problematic. Prob the camcorder.
Wow, very impressive.
👍
Question would a alcohol dip destroy the tape or information on the video tape then spin dry
No
thanks mate for this
You’re welcome mate!
Im doing an order of 11 vhsc tapes and all of them are like the one your having issues with. Tried your suggestions but still bad! It is what it is. Argggggg
One of 20 things.
i just ran across a tape that was hi8 and digital 8 mixed throughout - not just first half / second half. Customer is lucky I've seen some things (though never this particular issue).
Very rare! Glad you caught it!
These videos are so appreciated!
Glad you like them!
I did a batch of vhs tapes with a new SVHS player I picked up from ebay. Auto tracking, really nice machine. I noticed, there was a sort of uneven black border just in from the right side, like a thin, slanting border that's just there the whole time. Not huge, but it's there, but only on the right side, not the left. And it showed up on a lot of the tapes. And it isn't snow, which would indicate a dirty VCR. So I'm worried maybe something in the VCR is slanted or off somehow. But then I have an old copy of the Lion King on VHS and I popped that in to test it and the black border type thing wasn't there. So should I take that to mean the problem is with the degraded state of the tapes and not the vcr? If my "test tape" looks fine?
Hmmm! Never seen that before.
@@gotmemories I figured out the mysterious black border line.. I'm using the same Elgato cable you guys are, and in preferences there's a checkbox marked "preserve source format". I had this checked on, and the resulting video was 720x480. So it included a bit extra on each side, including the material that would normally get cut off by overscan. And when this option is unchecked, the resulting video is 640x480, so its cropped a bit, but it is cleaner. My instinct is always to preserve as much of the image as possible, but normal customers may appreciate the cleaner edges and not miss the extra bit on the sides. Add to this, the 640 files are formatted with 1.0 pixel ratio (square), and the 720 file is .89 pixel ratio, which is close to DV standard ratio (?). And the internet has been thus far unhelpful in determining which of these is preferable. I'm torn.
I want to say a massive THANK YOU for this video which has given me years of mini discs of family videos from 15 years ago. I bought a Pansonic DMR-EZ48V which plays the mini disc but ONLY if they are finalised. I also bought a power cable for my old (but it still works perfectly) Sony Handycam DVD 202. None of the above would have worked with the finalisation. I’d watch lots of other videos but yours was succinct, clear, detailed and easy. Big thanks again!
Fantastic! Glad I could help! If you fancy leaving a Google review, cut and paste your comment over! Always greatly appreciated! Cheers!
I feel like we're in a bit of a similar world. As a hobby, I archive vintage computer software that has never been uploaded online, and part of that is sometimes having to cleaning floppy disks (you'd be surprised though how many of them read just fine). People have come up with 3D-printed tools for doing this, but I wish there was something a little more automated like your VHS machine from Brazil!

Glad you enjoy it!
I used the Sony head cleaning tape, still no picture, used Alcohol and chamois stick and still no picture, only blue screen, please advise. Thanks
Prob need a new head.
Had legacy transfer about 20 vhs tapes and every single one is terrible. Not even watchable. Took them forever too. Huge waste of money!
Every time!
This is a great exposing the hypocrisy of the big BOX companies video. Keep up the great work.
Thanks, will do!
But where do you buy the replacement pads after they get too dirty after use for the Geneva tape cleaner ?
You have to cut pieces of chamois and replace them yourself
Hey Phil, I have several tapes that only have small parts taken up with content. Do you and others charge for the whole tape even if it's only 10 min. long? Thanks
Can’t speak for everyone but I charge flat rate up to 2hrs allowance per tape. Common misconception short tapes don’t take long, half the time there’s problems and it might have to be redone multiple times to get clear pic and audio. Oxidizing tapes are constantly clogging video heads. I have a $500 min order on any projects I take on.
Well, great!! Unfortunately I just came across this review…Legacy Box has had my stuff for months now, and I haven’t heard from them for weeks. Hope I at least get my memories back, even if they haven’t been digitized. Sad.
I have a tape that will play fine but none of the audio will pull and i even tired a different type of tape and it still won’t pull audio. Any suggestions?
Try a different camcorder. Prob heads dirty or worn and or defective in some way.
Hey Phil, I'm just starting this project. I bought a new Sony DCR-HC96 off of eBay. It had never been used, still in box, looks completely new. I got one tape to import fine. The 2nd tape was intermittently pixelated so I used the tape cleaner for 10 seconds. Then the 2nd tape wouldn't play back at all, just a blue screen, so I tried the cleaning tape for another 10 seconds. Still a blue screen. The first tape that imported fine now has large bars through it when I try to play that one in the camcorder now. Any thoughts? What would you do next?
As I say in all my videos you’ll need 3-5 camcorders. Budget at least $500-$1500 for equipment, cleaning tapes, parts and repairs. They’re all 30-40 years old and the tapes are oxidizing and constantly clogging the video heads and even worse if you stored in non AC location. It’s a two steps forward, one step back game, constant issues, welcome to my world & best of luck!
My Sony MiniDV camcorder had those horizontal bars like in your video on two tapes I was using. I used the Sony MiniDV tape cleaner and it went away on both. One is now perfect. But the other tape now has old fashioned horizontal snow. I put the good tape back in to make sure it was still good and it was. Does the snow indicate a tape head problem or a much worse issue with the electronics on the camcorder? Thanks for these videos. Super helpful.
Unsure. I always say you need a few different camcorders to cross reference with. Most of the time it’s the clogging of the head because particles are depositing constantly on the heads now as the tapes degrade & oxidize which is why they all have to be constantly monitored to stop the capture and clean the heads and restart.
A question do you dampen the rollers or just keep them dry?
All depends on the severity
I wouldn't trust them under any circumstance. First they only want my photos, films, and videos of they are degrading. Seriously? I'm not going to share THOSE kinds of pictures with anyone!
👍
I have used the Wolverine unit to transfer old - really old - 8 mm film and I find it acceptable. However, it is unfortunate that it does not have a way to pull the single uncompressed frames off so that they could be compiled into a video. The MP4 algorithm and chip take the progressive image and compress it before it leaves the chip, thus preventing a workaround. Too bad. Also, the playback speed for the frame rate needs to be corrected to correspond to the original film rate. Since the main focus is to compare the video quality it seems fair. I think the other unit did a pretty good job of capturing better color, but that is usually corrected post.
👍
I have watched a bunch of your videos, and this is the best video on cleaning moldy tape on youtube!!!! Are you worried about breathing in the mold dust? Thanks
Thanks for the comment and glad you enjoyed! Yes, mold is an issue, I do wear a mask.
